America the Empire?

Interesting piece from Southern Appeal dealing with the march toward Empire that the government in Washington is apparently on.

Based on an article in The Atlantic.

I have yet to figure out what a Southern Federalist really is (claim of ideology on the SA site). At first brush it seems dangerous but the opinions I see expressed are not inconsistent with my more anti-federalist viewpoint.

  1. Well, I've posted at length over at SA on what it means to be a Federalist, so you might check my archives if you're interested. Being for secession though is a big no-no for Federalists. Kind of hard to have a strong federal government if the Southern States run off and do their own thing. It may have been the thing to do back in 1861, but such a notion in the 21st Century strikes me as a tad extreme.

In any event, best of luck with your blog.

BTW, you might want to correct your blog to properly spell "Alexander Stephens" name. You won't go far with the secessionist crowd if you make errors like that on a consistent basis.

  2. Thanks for the correction.

My apologies for not having fully vetted your site before claiming my ignorance of Southern Federalism. I was realtively confident that I understood your meaning but in my limited time over at your blog I did not see a large amount of pro-federalist positions.

As for secession in the 21st century being a "tad extreme" I suppose the same argument was made before the Soviet Empire was disolved into many independent republics.
